New Browser Act could restore restrictions on sharing browser history

Following the US Senate’s vote to lift internet privacy rules back in April (opening up user search histories to being mined and sold to advertisers), a new act is seeking to restore the FCC’s original stance on privacy. The BROWSER Act (Balancing the Rights of Web Surfers Equally and Responsibly) would require users to consent and opt in for their sensitive information to be shared. If passed, the bill would apply to telcos, internet providers and tech companies like Facebook and Google.

New York City prepares for autonomous cars

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that auto and transport companies like Tesla, Waymo and Uber are now able to apply for a self-driving vehicle trial programme in New York City. The pilot project, which will end in March 2018, is aimed at testing how autonomous vehicles respond to the city’s roads and climate.

Instagram launches Story Search for hashtags and locations

Once again echoing Snapchat’s functionality, Instagram is introducing the ability to search Stories by location or hashtag, with the aim of increasing the time users spend on the platform. Now you can check out what’s going on at your destination, discover new parts of your own city, and follow real-time news. The company has stated that for now, Story Search will remain ad-free.
